Face Layout

As Blogger does not allow images in comment, this is a comment-as-post. The head for Julies animation is taking shape nicely. The topography (the way the polygons are laid out) need some work. Always keep the edgeloops in mind: they should go around the eyes and mouth (the blue lines in the image on the right). On the left side of the face (the right side for the viewer) I indicated which new edges can be created (green) and which deleted (red) working towards a better layout around the eye.

Een Hond uit Andalusie

This short came up in class. I consider it a must see for anyone in film and therefor also for you guys! "Un Chien Andalou" was created by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dali in 1929

Where is Mental Ray?

Some of you have complained about Mental Ray not being available as rederer. If you cannot select Mental Ray, the plugin is not loaded.

To load Mental Ray: go to Window → Settings/Preferences → Plug-in Manager. In the window that opens, find Mayatomr.mll (may be at the bottom under C:/Program Files/Autodesk/Maya2013/mentalray/plug-ins) and check loaded and Auto load

Happy rendering!

Strip The City

I was watching a show on the Discovery channel last Tuesday that created a nice link between the only two classes I'm taking this semester: animation and architecture. The show is called Strip The City and it uses cgi to display what it takes to make a city function properly. Last weeks episode was about San Francisco and the computer graphics literally "stripped" the city down to it's skeleton to show things like plumbing, subway systems, steel pilings, and supports in a very elegant and interesting way.

A company in Canada called Modus FX does the animations for the show.
Here's the Modus site

And here are some screen shots from the show:

It's on again tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 9:00pm and I would definitely suggest giving it a look.

Hotel Transylvania Look Dev

To help you prepare for you project presentations, here is an interesting clip on the look development for the Sony Pictures Imageworks feature "Hotel Transylvania". Next class I will refer to a different aspect of the animation for this movie.

Sketches for Animation Idea

Hi! So since I'm not sure if we were suppose to post images or not here are my sketches for my animation idea. I'm also working on this for my final project which is why they're detailed in both drawings and plot but the basic premise is about these two girls with a close friendship that become involved in cliques, popularity, and bullying when one of them wants to become friends with the popular girl Emily and gets the opportunity to do so.

I also have the animatic I did in 2d principles but I wasn't sure whether or not to post that and these are just some of many images I thought communicated best what happens in the story without giving away the little ''surprise'' at the end.

So I hope this helps. See you guys tomorrow!

How to make an animated movie

To start of the posts for this semester, in which we have two sections of ARIL 421 (Advanced Animation) competing to create the best and most mind boggling animation, here is a little graph on how it is done (from this blog in German but actually from a French cable Art channel):

And to actually get something produced, you have to pitch your idea first (as the first group will next Wednesday. Here is a video from the LA times of "the big guys" talking about pitching their ideas.
